Stantonsburg police get their man12 July 2007 — An attempted traffic stop in Stantonsburg resulted in a high-speed chase involving two counties and a canine unit. On June 30, an officer in Stantonsburg attempted to stop Curtis Earl Blount, 22, of Kinston for running a stop light at the intersection of Moyton Avenue and North Saratoga Street. However, instead of stopping, the vehicle sped off down NC Highway 58 toward Greene County. The officer pursed the vehicle, with speeds reaching over 100 mph. Mr. Blount was finally stopped in Greene County, where spike strips on Fort Run Road stopped his vehicle. But the chase didn’t end there. Mr. Blount then jumped out of his vehicle and ran into nearby woods. A canine was brought in and Mr. Blount was finally apprehended. He faces numerous charges and was taken to the Wilson County Jail, where he placed under a $4,000 secured bond. The Greene County Sheriff’s Department has also charged him with several violations. Another traffic stop on July 7 resulted in the arrest of a Wilson man. Rickey Montiley Finch of Wilson was stopped on Highway 222 near Bartee Bridge Road on Saturday after failing to maintain a lane of travel and impeding the flow of traffic. After a roadside investigation, the officer who conducted the stop detected the odor of alcohol. In addition, he discovered that Mr. Finch’s license was suspended for a DWI charge in Wilson County. The officer administered field sobriety tests, and reported that Mr. Finch performed poorly. A roadside Alco-Sensor test revealed a blood alcohol content of .19, more than twice the legal limit. Mr. Finch was taken into police custody and transported to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office. He refused an Intoxilyzer test, and was then booked into the Wilson County Jail under a $1,000 secured bond and was charged with DWI and driving while license revoked. His vehicle was seized and is being stored pending forfeiture hearings. The department also issued 26 traffic citations during the month of June, including 15 speeding violations, four driving while license revoked violations, and two DWI violations.
