deaths & funerals12 July 2007 MILTON J. BOYETTE Milton J. Boyette, 67, of Eureka died Friday, June 29. Mr. Boyette was a son of the late Matthew and Edna Daughtry Boyette. He had worked for a number of companies as an installer. The funeral was held Saturday at Wilson Memorial Service in Wilson. Surviving is his wife, Elizabeth Hill “Liz” Hill Boyette; two daughters, Violet Starling of Kenly and Teresa Carroll of Benson; a son, Milton J. Boyette Jr. of Goldsboro; two sisters, Penny McFatter of Goldsboro and Emma Jean Adams of Chocowinity; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
VELMA B. GURLEY Velma Bass Gurley, 77, died Saturday evening, July 7, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. Mrs. Gurley was born in Wayne County on July 9, 1929 to the late Edward Bass and Pearl Ferrell Bass. She was married to the late Joseph Edward Bass and Bobby Gurley. Mrs. Gurley was a retired seamstress and was a member of Fremont Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Monday evening in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. The Rev. Kelvin Gurley officiated. Interment was Tuesday morning in Elmwood Cemetery, Fremont. Mrs. Gurley is survived by her daughters, Sandye Sparks and husband, Jim, of Pikeville and Annette Capps and husband, Bobby, of LaGrange; her sons, Ernest Bass and wife, Margaret, of Princeton, Dwight Bass and wife, Sylvia, of Goldsboro and Dale Bass and wife, Lynn, of Florida; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Oddie Howell of Pikeville and her brother, Billy Bass of Goldsboro. Memorials may be made to the Kitty Askins Wish List, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534. LILLIE G. NELSON Lillie Gordon Nelson, 87, of Pikeville, died Friday, July 6. Graveside services were held Monday afternoon in the Maplewood Cemetery. The Rev. Dwayne Batten officiated. Surviving are a son, Vince Gordon of Kernersville; three granddaughters, Deborah G. Boyette, Maranda Gordon and Tiffany Gordon; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Boyette and Connor Boyette. Mrs. Nelson is preceded in death by her husband, Claude H. Nelson, and son, Don Alan Gordon.
FRANK NEWCOMB George Franklin “Frank” Newcomb, 57, of Pikeville, died suddenly on Wednesday, July 4 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Frank was born in Wayne County on June 5, 1950 to Inez L. Newcomb of Dudley and the late Glenn Hoover Newcomb. He was the former owner and operator of Newcomb’s Cabinet Shop. An avid fisherman and race car fan, Frank was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints in Goldsboro. Funeral services were held Friday, July 6 at 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel. Bishop Steve Briggs presided. Interment was Saturday morning, July 7, at Wayne Memorial Park. In addition to his mother, Frank is survived by his wife of 37 years, Deborah Waters Newcomb; his son, Eric Newcomb and wife, Jennifer, of Goldsboro; his daughter, Melissa N. Wall and husband, Greg, of Pikeville; his brothers, Milford Glenn Newcomb and wife, Gaynelle, of Goldsboro and Billy Gary Newcomb and wife, Deana, of Princeton; his sisters, Glenda Kay Newcomb of Goldsboro and Phyllis N. Hargrove and husband, Dell, of Goldsboro; and his grandchildren, Jordan Newcomb, Taylor Newcomb, Avery Newcomb, Christina Snipes, Ashley Snipes, Kari Wall and Josh Wall.
HATTIE D. SAMPSON Hattie D. Sampson, of McLeansville, died Monday, July 9 at Moses Cone Hospital. She was a native of Edgecombe County and was a resident of Wayne County for the majority of her life before relocating to Guilford County in 1985. Mrs. Sampson was a retiree of O’Berry Center and was a faithful member of Elm Grove Church of Christ, Pikeville, where she served with senior choir and Willing Workers. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m. from the Elm Grove Church of Christ, Pikeville with the Rev. Kenneth Vaughn and Rev. Warner Bell presiding. Interment will follow in the family plot of Elmwood Cemetery, Goldsboro. Her remains will be placed instate one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. The family visitation will be Thursday from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at Johnson and Sons Funeral Home, 115 Holderby St., Reidsville, N.C. Survivors are one daughter, Bessie Sampson Bell and spouse, the Rev. Warner Bell, of the home; four grandchildren, Warren Bell, De Lana Bell, Cory Bell, Antone Sampson and spouse, Erica; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Pitt of Pinetops, N.C. and Beatrice Cuffee of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Jesse Williams and spouse, Hazel, of Richmond, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Christine Sampson of Goldsboro and Meta Sampson of Warsaw; other relatives and many cherished friends. On Friday, July 13, a viewing will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro. MASTER SGT. NORMAN PENNINGTON Master Sgt. Norman Pennington, Retired U.S.A.F., 73, of Goldsboro, died Thursday morning, July 5, at his home. Norman was born in White Top, Va., on July 21, 1933, to the late Ed Pennington and Stella Riffey Pennington. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years which included service during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. After his military career, he worked with APV Baker and with Firestone in Goldsboro. Norman was a member of Oak Forest Church of Christ. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 7 at 3 p.m. at Oak Forest Church of Christ with Robert Goff and Lennie Reagan officiating. A funeral was also held Tuesday, July 10 at 11 a.m. at White Top Baptist Church in White Top, Va. Burial followed in the Pennington Family Cemetery with full military honors. He is survived by his wife, Vivian M. Pennington; his children, Ronald Pennington of Memphis, Tenn., Donald Pennington of Pikeville, Michael Pennington of Goldsboro, Michele Pennington of Pine Level and William Pennington of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Wade, Ross, Heath, Tyler, Alan, Matthew, Dustin, Chris, Will, Gage, Dalton, Kayla, Jacob, Alex, Melissa, and Anthony Pennington; and his great-grandchildren, Michael Dalton and Haley Pennington. He is also survived by his brothers, the Rev. T.A. Pennington of White Top, Va., Roger Pennington of Roanoke, Va., Fairley Pennington of Deerborn, Mich., and Larry Pennington of White Top; and his sister, Leona Weaver of Lansing. TAYLOR Rudolph “Steve” S. Taylor, 64, of Fremont, died Sunday, July 1 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his father, Rufus Davis. Funeral services were held Saturday morning, July 7, at McIntyre Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Alton Smith officiating. He is survived by his mother, Mary T. Davis; brother, James Renard Davis; sisters, Betty T. Jackson and Teresa Davis.
