Pikeville's Independence celebration

Even a little rain didn’t stop citizens of Pikeville from coming out to celebrate at the town’s Independence Day Celebration this weekend.
During the program, several honored guests offered comments on what freedom means to them. U.S. Representative Walter Jones, Senator John Kerr, Representative Louis Pate, and Clerk of Court Pam Minchew all spoke briefly to the crowd.
Mayor Sieger then presented the awards for Mr. and Mrs. Pikeville. Mevis Crawford was named Mrs. Pikeville for 2007. Mrs. Crawford owns Crawford’s Furniture, and is involved in several volunteer organizations, including serving as president of the United Methodist Women at St. Joseph United Methodist Church.
Johnny Howell was named Mr. Pikeville. Mr. Howell has worked as a farmer in the Nahunta area, as well as starting Pikeville Insurance, which his son now operates.
Mayor Sieger also named Mr. and Miss Independence, who will represent the spirit of the festival.
Attendance was down somewhat from previous years, but Mayor Herb Sieger said that the event was still a success. At press time, he did not have a final figure on the profits for the event, but all will go to the family of Ryan Hooks to pay for medical expenses.
The event was cut short by a downpour late in the afternoon, and despite a light drizzle falling from the sky, the fireworks display went on to dazzle the crowd as scheduled.
