Election signup time approaches

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer
As the Eureka, Pikeville, and Fremont town boards all reminded their members this month, the race for municipal elections is set to begin this Friday.
Starting at noon on July 6, incumbents and newcomers can file to run for open seats on municipal boards and sanitary district boards. The filing period will end at noon on July 20.
The biggest election will be in Fremont. All six seats on the board of aldermen, which are elected according to district, will be on the ballot this year, along with the mayor’s seat.
In Eureka, the seats of Myrtie Sauls, Al Head, and Bobby Gooding are on the ballot. For Pikeville, seats currently held by Bruce Thomas, Johnnie Weaver, and Al Greene are up for election.
In addition, two seats for Fork Township Sanitary District and five for Northwestern Wayne Sanitary District are on the ballot this year.
Board of Elections Director Gary Sims hasn’t heard from anyone in the three towns about running for office, but this isn’t necessarily bad news.
Candidates can file at their local town hall; however, additional paperwork will be required at the Board of Elections office in Goldsboro. Mr. Sims encourages candidates to file at the county office so they can go ahead and fill out all of the paperwork at once.
For more information on running for municipal office, call the Board of Elections at 739-1411, or visit their office at 209 South Williams Street.
