Head to Pikeville this Fourth

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

28 June 2007 — Pikeville citizens are gearing up for what promises to be another outstanding Independence Day Celebration this weekend at the community park. But this year, festival attendees will celebrate to support a local family.

The Independence Day Celebration is sponsored annually by the Pikeville Lions Club, and is a fun and patriotic way for families to celebrate the birth of the country.

This year, all of the proceeds from the event will go to the family of Ryan Hooks. Ryan is the son of Leigh and Michael Hooks. He was born with hydrocephalus, and has had multiple surgeries during the first few months of his life. The proceeds of this weekend’s festival will go to help the family pay for the surgeries.

The festival always promises fun for kids and adults alike. The main stage will host an opening ceremony at 10:00 to kick off the festivities, with the Sheriff’s Honor Guard presenting the colors. Mr. and Miss Independence will be crowned. The Lions Club will also recognize Mr. and Mrs. Pikeville.

Special guests will include Congressman Walter Jones, Senator John Kerr, Representative Louis Pate, and several Wayne County Commissioners.

The main stage will feature a variety of live music throughout the day, with a break from 2:00 until 3:00. Solo artist Casey Sutton will be featured, as well as musical groups, including several local gospel groups.

Attendees can travel into the past at the antique car show, which be held from 11:00-2:00, or visit the Cotton Museum. The museum features local history, and will be open all day.

For the kids (or just the young at heart), a variety of activities will be offered all day. Inflatable games will be set up for the kids, and all can play at no charge.

A horseshoe contest will be held as well.

Hayrides will also be offered all day at no charge. A tractor pull will also be held at 11:00.

Throughout the day, visitors can stop at one of the many vendors that will be at the festival. Food, crafts, and a variety of items will be for sale.

The event will culminate with a fireworks display beginning at 9:30. Make sure to get there early for a good spot.

Spaces are still available for vendors and musical guests at the festival. To sign up, contact Linda Westbrook at 735-3837 or 734-0873.
