Pikeville passes new budget

28 June 2007 — Pikeville’s town board adopted their budget for the new fiscal year Tuesday night, though it might be termed a continuation budget.

The budget, which is effective July 1, keeps taxes at 50¢ per $100 valuation and utility rates at the same level as the current budget and as Town Accountant Gary Pittman stated, it balances, but Commissioner Johnny Weaver corrected, only after the town borrows money.

Some of that borrowing may be put in place July 12. The planned electrical system upgrade will go forward after a special meeting at the town hall at 5 p.m. on that date as the town is expected to approve a $750,000 loan to fund the upgrades at that time. That is conditional on the Local Government Commission approving the town’s borrowing, and the town does not have that permission yet.
The meeting opened with a public hearing on the budget, but no members of the public were at the meeting.
