deaths & funerals28 June 2007 STEVEN D. BRIDGES Steven Dodson Bridges, 78, of Durham, died Saturday, June 23 at his home after several months of declining health. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Joyce H. Bridges; his three sons and two daughters-in-law, Wayne S. Bridges, Marcus D. and Lenore Forthofer Bridges of Durham, Grady M. and Cathy Evans Bridges of Pikeville; and grandchildren, Steven L. Bridges of Durham, Frances Evelyn (Eve) Bridges and Johnny Mitchell Bridges of Pikeville. A funeral was held Monday afternoon at Guess Road Baptist Church by the Revs. Greg Clark, pastor, Willard Hardison of Goldsboro and Tommy Honeycutt of Roseboro. Interment followed at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. ELDRESS BRENDA BRINSON Eldress Brenda Brinson, 50, of Goldsboro, died Thursday, June 21 at her home. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Bear Creek Headquarters Building. Burial followed at Becton Cemetery in Eureka. Mrs. Brinson is survived by her husband, Linwood Brinson Sr.; a daughter, Makalia Brinson; a son, Linwood Brinson Jr.; her mother, Ethel Debrew; a sister, Linda Debrew; and a brother, Dennis Debrew. He was born on October 2, 1951 in Elizabeth, N.J., to Julia Gordon of Goldsboro and the late Robert H. Gordon. Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife, Marilyn Gordon of Goldsboro; two stepsons, Sean Huneycutt of Goldsboro and Trey Huneycutt of Panama City, Fla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Ronald Conley of Goldsboro; one nephew, Michael Conley of Goldsboro; one niece, Jillian Besso of Pikeville; two grandnieces, Kaylee and Julia Besso of Pikeville; mother-in-law, Winnie Snider of Goldsboro; and sister-in-law, Linda Turner of Mount Olive. SMITH Kenneth Brenton “Brent” Smith, 24, of Fremont, died Monday, June 18 while vacationing with his family. Brent was born on March 18, 1983, in Wayne County to Kenneth and Lori Bissette Smith of Fremont. He graduated in 2001 from Charles B. Aycock High School. Brent graduated in 2005 from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He was working as a project engineer with T.A. Loving Company. Funeral services were held Tuesday evening at the United In Christ Church, 1314 Patetown Road, Goldsboro. Pastor Cliff Lewin and Pastor Willie Teachey officiated. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Destiney Smith, of the home; his brother, Mathew Smith, of the home; his maternal grandfather, E.C. Bissette of Goldsboro; his aunts and uncles, Wendy Bissette of Goldsboro, Terry and Bobby Howell of Fremont and their children, Mendi Burnham and Jeremy Howell, Bill and Frances Bissette of Wilmington and their daughter, Ashley Bissette, Tommy and Kay Smith of Goldsboro, Joyce and Billy Dail of Pink Hill, Carol and James Lewis of Wilmington, Barbara and Roger Lane of Knightdale, Steve Smith of Goldsboro and Carson Gooding of Goldsboro. Brent is also survived by his special aunt, uncle and family, Willie and JoAnn Teachey of Pikeville and their children, Lisa and Marty Massey, Peggy and Phil Mitchell and Tim Teachey; and special friends, Kenny and Lynette Washam, Tracy, Tia and Trina Owens, Alex Morrison and Sarah Tyndall. Brent was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Louise Bissette; his paternal grandparents, Garland and Daisy Gooding; and his uncle, Keith Smith. WINIFRED ‘WINNIE’ STRICKLAND Winifred “Winnie” Strickland, 64, of Wilson, died Saturday, June 23. Funeral services were conducted Monday evening at Joyner’s Funeral Home, Wilson. A graveside funeral service was held Tuesday morning in Evergreen Memorial Park, with the Rev. Johnny Sullivan and the Rev. Walt Tyndall officiating. Mrs. Strickland was a devoted wife, mother and Granny. She was a longtime member of Daniel’s Chapel F.W.B. Church. Surviving are her husband, Elton Strickland; one daughter, Darlene Langley and husband, David, of Wilson; two sons, Larry Strickland and wife, Lorienda, of Pikeville, and Gary Strickland and wife, Amanda, of Wilson; three granddaughters, Ariel and Savannah Strickland, both of Pikeville, and Rachel Langley of Wilson; one grandson, Brandon Langley of Wilson; and two sisters, Billie Ferrell of Morehead City and Betsy Williamson of Fayetteville.
