New principals for CBA, Belfast Academy

21 June 2007 — The Wayne County Board of Education approved several administrative changes for the 2007-08 school year at a special meeting called on June 19. Six schools will start the school year with new principals.

“With these appointments, we are putting people in places where they can maximize their talents and experience and where they can best meet the needs of Wayne County Public Schools,” states Dr. Steven D. Taylor, Superintendent.

Dr. Earl W. Moore, who has served as principal at Brogden Middle School since July 2003, has been named principal for C.B. Aycock High School, replacing the retiring Eddie Radford. Dr. Moore previously served as assistant principal for one year at Meadow Lane Elementary, and taught business and marketing at C.B. Aycock for 23 years prior to going into school administration. Dr. Moore holds a B.S. in Business Education from Fayetteville State University, a Master’s in School Administration from East Carolina University, and a Doctorate in Education from NOVA Southeastern University.

Five current assistant principals have been named principals for the 2007-08 school year. Rolanda Best, who has been serving as an assistant principal at Greenwood Middle School since March 2007, will replace the retiring Larry Dean as principal at Greenwood. Ms. Best, who was a North Carolina Principal Fellow, served as an assistant principal at Spring Creek Elementary from July 2003 to March 2007. She previously taught middle and high school math at Southern Wayne High School and Spring Creek High School for seventeen and a half years. Ms. Best has a B.S. in Mathematics and a Master’s in School Administration from East Carolina University.

Replacing the retiring Alex Wingate at Northwest Elementary will be Theresa Cox. Ms. Cox has been serving as principal at Belfast Academy since January 2006. She also served as assistant principal at Dillard Middle from July 2004 to January 2006, and at Northwest from July 2001 to July 2004. Ms. Cox was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and a North Carolina Principal Fellow. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from UNC-Greensboro and a Master’s of School Administration from Fayetteville State University. She taught middle school language arts in Wayne and Pitt County Schools.

John Twitty, currently serving as assistant principal at Eastern Wayne High School, will replace Theresa Cox as principal at Belfast Academy. A retired Air Force member, Mr. Twitty has served as assistant principal at Eastern Wayne High since July 2005, and served at Mount Olive Middle as assistant principal for one year. He taught language arts at Belfast and Brogden Middle schools. Mr. Twitty has a Bachelor of Applied Science from Troy State University with certification in Language Arts from East Carolina University, and a Master’s in School Administration from the University of Phoenix.

Karen Wellington will be moving from assistant principal at Meadow Lane Elementary to principal at Brogden Middle School. She has served as assistant principal at Meadow Lane since July 2003, and was also assistant principal at Goldsboro Middle during the 2002-03 school year. She previously taught math and served as a principal intern in Wayne and Wilson counties. Ms. Wellington was a North Carolina Teaching fellow, and she earned a B.S. in Math from North Carolina Central University and a Master’s in School Administration from East Carolina University.

Gail Sasser, assistant principal at Goldsboro Middle and Intermediate since July 2004, has been named principal at Mount Olive Middle.

Jane Walston will replace Dr. Marlee Ray as Director of Exceptional Children/Instructional Support Services.

Newly assigned assistant principals who are moving to different schools include Keith Faison (from Carver Elementary to Mount Olive Middle), Tonya Faison (from Norwayne Middle to Spring Creek Elementary), Lanita Ivery (from Mount Olive Middle to Carver Elementary), Mary Kay James (from Northwest Elementary to Greenwood Middle), Ryan Nelson (from North Drive Elementary to Eastern Wayne High), Charles Smith (from Eastern Wayne Middle to Northwest Elementary), Diane Watts (from C.B. Aycock to Norwayne Middle), and E. Craig Uzzell (from Mount Olive Middle to Eastern Wayne Middle).

New assistant principals are Tameka Allen, Meadow Lane Elementary; Jessica Anderson, C.B. Aycock; Nicole Barrett, Goldsboro Intermediate; Charlenna B. Carter, North Drive Elementary; T. Kevin Smith, Spring Creek High; and Karen Stevens, Dillard Middle.
