deaths & funerals7 June 2007 LEONARD D. HOOKS Leonard Dickinson Hooks, 96, of Fremont, died Saturday, June 2 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro. Leonard was born in Fremont and attended Davidson College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a farmer and insurance agent in Fremont and a tobacconist on the bright leaf and burley markets in North Carolina and Tennessee until his retirement. In 1940, he married Edith Griggs Bowman, his wife of 66 years. Leonard was a long-time member of Fremont United Methodist Church and served as a town councilman for several years. He is survived by his daughters, Betty Hooks Henderson of Raleigh and Lynn Hooks Alexander of Greensboro; son-in-law, Barry Alexander of Greensboro; brother, George Leon Hooks Jr. of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Johanna Henderson Reese of Cary, Amy Henderson Hoglund and Christopher Hooks Alexander of Raleigh, Douglas Leonard Henderson of Durham and Walter Leonard Alexander of Portland, Oregon; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Bowman Hooks; sister, Mary Hooks Brown; and brother, William Robert Hooks. The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 6 at 11 a.m. at Fremont United Methodist Church. A burial followed for family and special friends. The family asks that memorials be made to Fremont United Methodist Church. JASON C. THOMPSON Jason Cleveland Thompson, 28, of Fremont, died Saturday, June 2 as a result of a four-wheeler accident. A native of Wayne County, he was the son of Cleve and Sharon Strickland Thompson of Fremont, and the husband of Crystal Holland Thompson of Fremont. He was the owner of Thompson Transport. Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Joseph United Methodist Church in Pikeville with the Rev. Brian Huffman officiating. Burial followed in the Pikeville Cemetery. He is also survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Thigpen, and son, Christian Boykin, both of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Scott and Kristen Thompson of Raleigh; a maternal grandmother, Myrtle Strickland of Fremont; a paternal grandmother, Wilma Thompson of Pikeville; and an aunt and uncle, Bonnie and Gerald Cannon of Pikeville. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Arnold Strickland, paternal grandfather G.C. Thompson, and uncle Tim Strickland. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph United Methodist Church, P.O. JO L. BURCH Teresa Jo Lanier Bryan Burch, 53, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, June 5 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday from Cricket Ridge Church, with the Rev. Juanita Hollowell and Dr. Lily Chou officiating. A burial service was held Friday morning at the Amos Lanier Cemetery at Chinquapin. A member of Cricket Ridge Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, she was a certified day care operator, having been co-owner and director of the former Happy Days Nursery that was in Mount Olive. At the time of her death, she was the director of Pineview Baptist Church Day Care Center in the Belfast community. Preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Burch; her father, William Earl Lanier; and a brother, Steve Lanier, she is survived by her mother, Dorothy Henderson Lanier of Dudley; a son, William Paul “Bo” Bryan of Aberdeen; a daughter, Mitzi Bryan of Albertson; three grandchildren, Colton Taylor, Gage Bryan, and Zachary Fields; a brother and sister-in-law, Ranny and Anita Lanier of Dudley; another sister-in-law, Debbie Lanier of Grantham; a brother-in-law, Bobby Burch, his wife, Bobbie of Mount Olive; the Buddy Bryan family of Dobbersville; nieces, Courtney King and husband, Andy, of Goldsboro, Ashley, Amber, and Abbie Lanier of Grantham, Taylor Braswell of Wallace, Kim Burch Jones and husband, Darrell, and daughter, Caroline, all of Mount Olive; and a nephew, Trey Braswell of Wallace.
