CBA dominates in finale, 10-2

By Barry Merrill

7 June 2007 — With one win under their belt and their strongest pitcher available if needed in a third game, Charles B. Aycock Coach Charles Davis sent Brandon Price to the mound at NC State’s Doak Field Saturday morning. He was as strong a pitcher as they could have hoped for.

Price limited Southeast Guilford to just three hits as the Wayne high school’s Falcons rolled over the Western 3-A Champ Falcons, 10-2, to claim the state 3-A title.

Aycock took the lead in the top of the first, with Jay Rose and Connor Narron delivering key singles as CBA scored four times.

The aggressive Aycock hitters were making solid contact again in the second as Garrett Davis, Rose and Joseph Toler each doubled en route to another four run rally.

Toler added another double in the fourth to make it 9-0. Davis doubled in the sixth, scoring Bradley Taylor with the final CBA run.

Price allowed two runs in the bottom of the fourth when he walked one and another reached on an error. A single brought the two runs home, but the batter was thrown out at second.

Price would register six strikeouts and just two walks in five innings of work.

Though Price was clearly in control, Coach Davis brought in Garrett Davis to pitch the last two innings of the state championship, though Aycock threatened to cut the game short and not give the ace left-hander any time on the mound in the series.

Davis did allow a hit and a walk, but struck out four in his two innings of work.

CBA piled up 11 hits in the game. Davis and Toler each had three hits. Rose had two hits and three rbi’s in the game.

Aycock won their second state baseball championship, the first coming at the hands of the recently celebrated 1974 team.

This Aycock team won a total of 31 games, and lost just four.
