CBA ‘Rose’ to occasion in game one

7 June 2007 — Charles B. Aycock made the big plays early, when they needed them, and Southeast Guilford didn’t, as the Wayne County Falcons scored a decisive win, 9-3, in the first game of the 3-A State Championships.

The game, Friday at NC State’s Doak Field, set the tone for the series, which CBA went on to win Saturday morning.

The Western 3-A Champ Falcons had the first chance to make the big play. CBA opened the door in the second when left-hander Grant Sasser yielded a hit and a walk, and the usually taunt Aycock defense surrendered an error. SEG had the bases loaded with one out.
But it was the CBA Falcons who rose to the occasion. Sasser got the SEG hitter to ground one to second, and stellar Falcons second baseman Joseph Toler turned it into a inning-ending double play.

In the bottom of the third, it was the Aycock offense’s chance. Will Edgerton tagged a double, and with two outs, senior Garrett Davis brought him home with a single to right. Zack Wright followed with a walk. And then CBA’s Jay “Rose” to the occasion.

The junior first baseman took the first pitch out, only his second homer of the year.

The four run inning would give Sasser all of the support he would need.

He allowed a couple of runners on in the fifth, but Toler got the third out of the inning without any damage as Sasser threw behind the runner at first.

Sasser gave up a solo homer in the top of the sixth, one of only four hits he would yield on the afternoon. That made it 5-1, CBA, but Aycock would push four more runs across in the bottom of the frame on singles by Edgerton, Bradley Taylor, and Davis, capped by a triple by Wright.

Sasser was relieved by Kyle Harmon, who pitched the seventh. Sasser would leave the game with seven strikeouts and three walks in his six innings of work.

The West Champs showed the power that Sasser had effectively shut down, tagging two Harmon offerings for homers, albeit solo shots, in the seventh. Harmon also registered two strikeouts in completing the game.

Davis led CBA hitters with three hits, while Edgerton and Wright joined Rose with two hits apiece, but it was the Rose homer that many will long remember.
