S. Central ends Lady Falcons’ season

24 May 2007 —
By Sarah A. Wise

Some might have seen the rainstorm that drove the Lady Falcons off of the field before the start of the first inning Friday night as a bad omen.

And though the Aycock girls were shutout by their opponents 4-0, head coach David West said it all boiled down to an off night for the Falcons and an excellent night for South Central.

“It wasn’t one of our better ones,” he said. “That right there was the reason we lost.”

The girls eagerly took the field at 7:00 despite a steady rain, but the field was cleared before the first pitch was thrown as the rain intensified.

After waiting out the storm for half an hour, and waiting for the field to be restored to playing conditions, the two teams finally commenced play.

However, the night turned out to be a disappointment for the Falcons, who remained scoreless against South Central’s tight pitching. Aycock’s solo hit of the night came from Julia Lancaster.

Lancaster also took the loss from the mound on Friday night. She allowed five hits and four earned runs, while striking out seven.

The game was close for much of the night, with South Central scoring their first run in the fourth, but clean hits and a pair of errors from the Lady Falcons in the seventh gave South Central the advantage.

“It just happened that we didn’t get any breaks, didn’t force any runs, and they got their hits,” said Coach West. “We had some errors, and they put them together.”

The Aycock ladies end their season with a 21-6 overall record.
